Design mistakes that make your home feel less inviting (and how to fix them)

As a home stylist, one of the most common goals my clients share is, "I want my home to feel more welcoming." But even the most beautifully decorated space can feel cold or off-putting if a few key design elements are out of sync. Whether you’re styling your entryway, living room, or an entire home, here are some common design mistakes that could be making your space feel less inviting—along with simple fixes that can make a world of difference.

1. Furniture That’s Pushed Up Against Every Wall

The Mistake: Many people assume that pushing furniture against walls makes a room feel bigger. But this layout often creates a disconnected, awkward feel.

The Fix: Pull furniture in slightly to create cozy conversation zones. Even a few inches off the wall can help your space feel more curated and lived-in.

2. Harsh Lighting or Only Overhead Lighting

The Mistake: Relying solely on overhead lighting can make a room feel flat and sterile.

The Fix: Layer your lighting! Combine ambient (overhead), task (lamps), and accent (candles, sconces) lighting for a warm, inviting glow. Use warm-toned bulbs and dimmers to create a softer mood.

3. Too Much Matching

The Mistake: Buying full furniture sets or over-coordinating colors can leave a space feeling impersonal or “staged.”

The Fix: Mix textures, finishes, and materials to add depth and character. A home should feel collected over time, not straight from a catalog.

4. Neglecting Entryways

The Mistake: Your entryway sets the tone for the rest of your home—but it’s often overlooked or cluttered.

The Fix: Add a small bench or console table, a mirror to reflect light, and a bowl or basket to drop keys. Even small entryways can be made functional and welcoming.

5. Cluttered Surfaces

The Mistake: Too many decorative objects on every surface can overwhelm the eye and reduce visual breathing space.

The Fix: Embrace negative space. Group items in odd numbers (like 3 or 5), and leave areas blank to let your statement pieces shine.

6. Lack of Personal Touches

The Mistake: A home without personal details can feel like a showroom.

The Fix: Add warmth with family photos, travel finds, heirlooms, or art that speaks to you. These touches add heart and authenticity to your space.

7. Ignoring Texture and Layering

The Mistake: Relying solely on color or style without layering in different materials makes a space feel one-dimensional.

The Fix: Mix in a variety of textiles—linen, wool, wood, leather, woven baskets, or greenery—to bring richness and comfort.
