Things home stylists shouldn't gatekeep

The truth is, great styling isn’t about complicated rules or expensive furniture. It’s often about a few simple principles used thoughtfully. Many of the things that make a home feel beautiful, calm, and welcoming aren’t really secrets at all. As a home stylist, I am happy to share the foundational ideas that help make spaces look polished and intentional.

Here are some of the things home stylists don’t gatekeep.

Styling Is Often About What You Remove

When people think of styling, they usually think of adding things — pillows, accessories, decor. But one of the first things stylists often do is edit the room.

Too many small objects, piles of decor, or crowded surfaces can make a space feel chaotic. Removing a few items creates breathing room and allows the pieces you love to really stand out.

Sometimes the fastest way to improve a room is simply taking a few things away.

The Rule of Three Really Works

Stylists often group decor in odd numbers, especially in threes. There’s something visually pleasing about it — the eye naturally moves through the arrangement.

For example, on a coffee table or console you might see:

  • a stack of books

  • a small decorative object

  • a plant or candle

Three simple elements can create a styled look without feeling cluttered.

Pillows Are Meant to Add Texture

Throw pillows are one of the easiest ways to refresh a room, but the key isn’t quantity — it’s texture and variation.

Stylists often mix:

  • different fabrics

  • subtle patterns

  • varying sizes

This layering creates interest without overwhelming the space.

And contrary to what some people think, you don’t need ten pillows to make a sofa look styled.

Lighting Changes Everything

Lighting is one of the most powerful elements in a home, and it’s something stylists pay close attention to.

A room usually feels best when it has multiple light sources, such as:

  • overhead lighting

  • a table lamp

  • a floor lamp

This layering makes the space feel warm and inviting rather than flat or overly bright.

Books Are One of the Best Styling Tools

Stylists frequently use books when styling shelves, coffee tables, and consoles.

Books add:

  • height

  • color

  • personality

They also help create layers when placing decorative objects on top of them. A stack of books with a small object or candle can instantly make a surface feel thoughtfully arranged.

Plants Instantly Bring Life to a Room

One of the easiest ways to elevate a space is simply adding greenery.

Plants soften a room and introduce natural texture. Even a single plant in the right place can make a room feel fresher and more inviting.

For people who don’t love plant care, there are also many beautiful faux options that can create the same effect.

The Best Rooms Aren’t Perfect

One of the biggest misconceptions about styled homes is that everything must match perfectly.

In reality, many stylists prefer spaces that feel collected over time rather than perfectly coordinated.

Mixing materials, combining old and new pieces, and layering textures often makes a room feel more interesting and personal.

The goal is not perfection — it’s creating a home that feels comfortable, welcoming, and reflective of the people who live there.

Good Styling Should Feel Accessible

At the end of the day, home styling isn’t about secret formulas or exclusive design knowledge. It’s about understanding a few principles and applying them in ways that make your home feel like your own.

And while stylists bring experience and a trained eye to the process, many of the ideas behind beautiful spaces are things anyone can learn.

Sometimes all it takes is a fresh perspective, a little editing, and a few thoughtful details to make a home feel truly special.
